Theme in Pluely v1 Settings: System, Light, and Dark Mode

Theme is the appearance control in Pluely v1 Settings, described in the app as a way to "personalize your experience with custom theme and transparency settings." It offers three modes — System, Light, and Dark — so Pluely can match your operating system, a bright room, or a dim one, whichever fits how and where you are working.

What it does

Theme changes the color scheme of the entire Pluely window — backgrounds, text, and overlay chrome all shift together depending on which of the three modes is selected:

  • System — Pluely follows whatever theme your operating system is currently set to. If your OS is in dark mode, Pluely renders dark; if your OS switches to light mode (manually, or on an automatic day/night schedule), Pluely switches with it, with no separate action needed on your part.
  • Light — Pluely v1 describes this mode as using "the light theme for better visibility in bright environments." Choose this when you are working somewhere well-lit, such as near a window during the day or under strong overhead lighting, where a light background is easier on the eyes than a dark one.
  • Dark — Pluely v1 describes this mode as using "the dark theme for comfortable viewing in low light." Choose this for evening work, dim rooms, or any setting where a bright white interface would be harsh to look at.

How to switch Theme

  1. Open the Pluely Settings window ("Manage your settings").
  2. Find the Theme section, described as personalizing your experience with custom theme and transparency settings.
  3. Select System to have Pluely automatically track your operating system's theme.
  4. Select Light if you want the "better visibility in bright environments" look regardless of your OS setting.
  5. Select Dark if you want the "comfortable viewing in low light" look regardless of your OS setting.
  6. The change applies to the Pluely window immediately.

Choosing the right mode for you

If you already switch your operating system between light and dark automatically (for example, on a sunrise/sunset schedule), System is the lowest-maintenance choice — Pluely will always match without you thinking about it again. If you have a strong personal preference that does not depend on your OS setting — say, you always want Pluely dark no matter what time of day it is, even if the rest of your desktop is light — pick Light or Dark explicitly and Pluely will stay on that choice regardless of what your system does.

A practical tip: if you frequently move between very different lighting conditions in the same day (a bright office in the morning, a dim room at night), System mode combined with your OS's automatic theme switching means Pluely adapts without any manual settings changes at all.

How Theme relates to Window Transparency

Theme and Window Transparency are separate controls grouped under the same "personalize your experience" heading in Settings, but they do different jobs: Theme changes color and contrast, while Window Transparency changes how see-through the window is against whatever is behind it on your screen. The two combine — for example, a Dark theme at a lower transparency reads as a solid, high-contrast overlay, while a Light theme at higher transparency blends more softly into a bright background.

See Window Transparency for the companion appearance slider, and Overlay Tabs for arranging what you see once the window's look is set. For the full list of Settings sections, see the Settings overview. For working comfortably during Ask and Listen sessions, see Ask mode and Listen mode.
